• On 14 April 1861 Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law found the clock component factory Zeller & Junghans. For the location of the factory they choose a site in the Lauterbachtal valley, on which their less-than-successful oil mill stands. This is promptly converted and soon sees the arrival of the first production machinery.

However, the company still has some way to go before it produces its first complete watches: to begin with, components are produced for Black Forest clocks, such as wooden cases, bronze signs, hands, glass doors, wire hooks, hinges and pendulums, the first clocks follow in 1866.
