max bill MEGA Solar receives the Red Dot Design Award 2021

Each year the design industry awaits presentation of the Red Dot Design Awards with bated breath. This prestigious distinction is bestowed by an international panel of experts in the disciplines of Product Design, Brands & Communication Design and Design Concept, and represents outstanding design quality.

This year, Junghans were entered with the max bill MEGA Solar and won over a 50-strong jury made up of design experts, professors and journalists to pick up the highest award of the en-tire competition – the Red Dot: Best of the Best – in the Product Design category. In total, more than 7,800 products from 60 countries were entered for contention in the design awards. Evaluations relating to formal quality, ergonomics and durability of the products were undertaken.

“Winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best demonstrated unique design competence. Their concepts set trends in product design and provide new perspectives for future developments. Only a handful of our participants achieve that perfect symbiosis of aesthetic and functionality”, Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot explains the significance of the award and congratulates the winners: “This outstanding achievement deserves every acknowledgement. I wish all of the prize winners my most heartfelt congratulations.”

Commendation in the anniversary year

A range of watches developed by product designer and Bauhaus artist Max Bill in 1961 is still being produced to the original concepts today. While the design of the watches remains practically unchanged, Junghans continue to develop the respective features. With a view to the special association of the puristic product design from Max Bill and state-of-the-art watch technology, the max bill MEGA Solar is particularly noteworthy– and this watch has now been honoured with the Red Dot Design Award exactly 60 years after the original was unveiled.

The dial of the max bill MEGA Solar boasts a distinctive layout focussing on the bare essentials. The artist’s meticulous eye for scale is perfectly demonstrated in the proportions of the minute and hour markings. Luminous dots at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions, with double dots at 12 o’clock guarantee optimum readability of the time. A slender edge to the case also ensures that attention is drawn towards the dial, while the matt colouring emphasises the minimalistic design of the timepiece.

Reduction of the watch face is immediately evident thanks to a special new development: Junghans devised a light-permeable dial especially for the max bill MEGA Solar, beneath which a convex solar cell supplies energy to the highly-efficient and precise multi-frequency radio-controlled solar movement. State-of-the-art technology fits seamlessly into the Max Bill design. This award-winning model is also available with sapphire crystal as of 2021.

A perpetual calendar and adjustability of all recognised time zones using the crown or via app offers additional convenience. The skin-friendly titanium case is durable, but at the same time also extremely lightweight.

The max bill MEGA embodies everything that the creator of this watch series held most dear: a combination of splendour and practical value.
